Smuttynose Big Beer Release: Homunculus

I recently subscribed to the Smuttynose Big Beer Series Release. Me and a couple friends went in on a half case (6) of bombers of their Big Beer released monthly. Each month they hold a release at the Smuttynose brewery for the subscribers, consisting of a great spread of food donated by locals and beer from Smuttynose. This is a huge perk to those who are part of the subscription. I highly recommend signing up, if not for the beer, to meet a ton of beer lovers once a month for an awesome beer social. More info on the subscription here (link).

On tap at Smuttynose, Black IPA!

This month’s release was the much anticipated Homunculus. As described on Smuttynose’s website:
“This hoppy, Belgian-style golden ale first appeared in early 2007 as the first edition of our Short Batch Series. At that time, we called it the Gnome, an homage to Brasserie d’Achouffe.”

This beer came out at the right time for more than one reason. First it’s a great summer beer, nice and hoppy to cure any of the summer heat blues. Second, the Clown Shoes label controversy was in full force and the label on Homunculus can be seen as controversial. I don’t care to fight about labels on beer, I care to drink it. In my opinion the label is creative and fun. Here is some background the info besides the obvious. The high level definition of Homunculus is “little man” to which the creative minds of Smutty went to work and used the bottom of a beer bottle as the egg and the faces of the brewers as sperm on the label. Trust me, I won’t get used to describing the label out loud to people anytime soon :).

The beer should be hitting shelves soon to be flying off them within the next week or so. Even if you forget to look for it you can’t miss it with a label like this. Don’t miss it!

Til next Big Beer release…
