Describe the name of you blog
When I first started blogging it was for my own reference, and I thought that I’d be like “The Phantom Gourmet” and no one would ever know me or meet me in person, so “The Beer Babe” sounded like a fantastic pen name. I don’t claim to be any sort of beautiful “babe” but the name is very easy to remember so it stuck. I think it works ๐Ÿ™‚

How long have you been blogging?
I started blogging in May 2007 so I suppose that’s about a little more than 3 and a half years.

Why did you chose to blog?
I had a few friends that were into craft beer and we tried a lot of them while living together. We’d get a six pack of something we’d never heard of, talk about it and share our thoughts while drinking it. Unfortunately, no one took notes so we completely forgot about which ones we loved and which we didn’t want to have again. So after moving out to my own place, I decided to start writing my tasting experiences down, and thus, the blog was born.

What is the coolest thing that has happened since you have been blogging?
There have been several “high points” in my blogging experiences. It’s hard to pick a top one. This year I went to the first-ever Beer Bloggers Conference in Boulder, CO and there were a lot of amazing moments there – but one of the things that I got to do was taste BrewDog’s “End of History” – the 55% ABV beer packaged in a taxidermied woodland creature. I had to make a video to enter and I came in second place, but the guys at BeerTapTV let me try it anyway. It was a ridiculous beer – tasted like beer and moonshine – but I know I’ll never get the chance to taste anything like it again.

Beer Me

Favorite Beer (Top 3 if you canโ€™t decide on 1)
I always change this question to be, “If I could have one beer on a desert island that I’d have to drink for the rest of my life, what would it be?” And for me, that’s Dogfish Head’s 90 Minute IPA, hands down.

Favorite Beer experience
Ugh, so many of these. Getting a personal brewery tour from a brewer at Dogfish Head Brewery in Milton, DE, drinking crazy old geuze and lambics with Chris Lively at the Lion’s Pride, Drinking Rogue Chocolate Stout poured for me by Sebbie Buhler (who’s on the label of Rogue Chocolate Stout) at the Beer Bloggers Conference, my first sip of Kate the Great (Portsmouth Brewery), helping organize Portsmouth Craft Beer Weekend… there are lots.

Do you use any Beer App?
I just started using Untappd since I bought a phone that can actually do stuff other than just make calls. I don’t know if I’ve seen it as being ‘useful’ yet, just fun.

Favorite Food/Beer Pairing
This one was an accident but still my favorite. I was at a mexican restaurant and we ordered flan (a custard-based dessert). While sipping on a RedHook ESB, we took a bite of flan and *voila* the best combination ever. It made the ESB sweeter and the ESB brought some great depth to the flan. Awesome all around.

Are you a homebrewer? Any aspirations of becoming one?
I have brewed and helped friends brew beer, but the reality right now is that I don’t have a lot of time. If I got a place with a backyard, I’d probably do it more often, but right now I’ve just got too much going on. Not writing it off, though ๐Ÿ˜‰

Favorite Bar
I went to NYC recently and had a great time at The Blind Tiger. I’d go back again for sure and if I lived in NYC I think half of my paycheck would be left behind each week. In Portland, my favorite is definitely Novare Res Bier Cafe. Just the most awesome selection of fabulous beers – and super-knowledgeable staff that really take the time to get to know you. Major kudos to them. Also, there’s the Lion’s Pride in Brunswick, that is the kind of place where they know me by name and offer me new beers on tap that they know I’d like. Both are worth your time if you’re ever up in the area.

Biggest โ€œmust doโ€ beer goal in 2011
I really, really, really want to go back for the next Beer Bloggers Conference (this time in August in Portland, OR). So I have to scrimp and save but I think it could definitely happen. Other than that, I want to start working on my goal to get to all of the breweries in Maine, and I think I can make a lot of headway on that this year.

The Obvious Questions

Opt in or Opt out of the TSA full body scan? and why
Opt in. The guy who invented the full body scan technology did so because it’s the lowest amount of radiation any kind of x-ray can give. It can’t even get through skin. The dentist is more dangerous to your health. So if the worst thing that happens is some TSA guy sees a pixelated version of my naked body, who cares? I’d rather have someone ogling a blurry rendering of me than have a stranger feel me up for no good reason.

If you could be on any reality TV show, what would it be and why?
Well I was on Brewmasters. For a whole 2 frames of video. Really! If you pause it at just the right point…. Anyway, to get back to your question – I’d like to go on Pawn Stars, American Pickers or something like that and have someone tell me that random junk that I have is worth a couple hundred thousand dollars. That would be nice.

What would the world be like without beer?
Boring.
