Beer Notes: Dogfish Head Bitches Brew

This had been sitting in my fridge for far too long. I picked up Bitches brew when I went up to Portland, ME a couple weeks back and I had even picked up another bottle at christmas time for my dad in Western, MA. After spanning two states and buying it twice it still took me a month to try it, but last night was the night.

I wanted to wait for a good meal to drink it with and I was in luck when Lisa decided to flex her culunary muscles and whip up some awesome Egg Plant Parm, so good. Bitches Brew, as most of you know is from Dogfish and was featured on Episode One of Brewmasters. The beer is a tribute to Miles Davis and his smooth Jazz, and this beer is smooth.

The beer pours a dark brown with a nice brown head on it. The smell intriguied me but I couldn’t figure it out just yet. I wanted to review this beer on my own without the influence of the beer label or any beer site, so I closed my eyes to figure it out. After smelling it some more I came to the conclusion it was bananas just before being put into a mix for banana bread. Not rotten banana’s, but the caremelized sweet banana smell, mmm.  I also smelled chocolate. The taste, as best I can describe it, tastes like dark choloate banana bread, smooth and sweet. It sits up there at 9% ABV but does a nice job covering it up with some great sweet flavor. This was really well carbonated, not too much and not too little, just right. If you get a chance you gotta get out and find this brew. It will probably set you back $16+ but it’s well worth it and a brew to impress your beer loving friends with! A great beer to kick off my 2011 Beer Notes.

Cheers,
B
