Green Monkey is a Winner for Restaurant Week

There are still a handful of places I have yet to visit in my 2+ years in Portsmouth and Green Monkey was one of those places. For one reason or another we never made the short walk to the Asian bistro but I can tell you now I am glad I went tonight.

Tonight kicked off Portsmouth Restaurant Week. Pretty much like it sounds, it’s a week that all the Restaurants in town put forth their best selections on a fixed price menu for lunch (not all restaurants serve lunch) and dinner. How do you decide which restaurant to go to when you have so many choices?! I’ll tell you what does it for me, choices. If you a good variety of items on your Restaurant Week menu, you will see me at your establishment. Green Monkey had some great choices.

I started out with the Ahi tuna napoleon, crispy wonton, soy vinaigrette, wasabi mayo, avocado, micro greens for the appetizer and it was stacked high and tasted fresh and good accompanied by a Harpoon IPA. My girlfriend got the Lobster spring rolls in lettuce wrap, soba noodles, lemongrass pesto and liked it as well. Off to a good start. For our main courses I got the Asian style skirt steak, grilled onions,toasted sesame seeds, root vegetable mash. They gave me a knife but it was cut well enough where I didn’t need one. Very good main course, if anything it could have been hotter. My girlfriend got the Scallion ginger crusted salmon, soy glazed carrots and cauliflower,ponzu pickled cucumber salad, cilantro rice cake and I stole some bites because it was really good. Dessert was the highlight of the show. I got the Chocolate and peanut butter terrine, graham cracker crust, and marshmallow sauce and it was very rich. I didn’t finish it but I made a huge dent in in. The moat of marshmallow sauce was awesome to drag the cake through. My girlfriend got the Apple hazelnut torte with house made bourbon ice cream. It was huge and tasty, marking a great end to the perfect amount of food.

What I enjoyed at the end was the owner came to our table to welcome us to Restaurant Week and wanted to see how everything was, ask our names and see if they could change anything up on the menu since it was Night #1. That was very nice of her and made an impression on me. What’s the picture above? On every table cloth there is a stamped monkey and we decided to give it a party hat, some shoes and put it in a last second basketball game.
